The Academy had a good solid win against Weymouth on Wednesday despite a fairly tired looking and at times lack lustre performance.

Fielding a strong side that included Craig Robson and Steve Hutchings - making his Academy debut- the Academy got off to a flyer with a goal after 1 minute. A relatively innocuous shot from Hutchings was only parried away and Baldacchino crept in to round the keeper and fire into an empty net. A goal this early - followed by several close efforts - perhaps gave the Hawks the false impression that they would stroll the game. They knew that they were the far superior side in both technical ability and strength but after 5 minutes of sustained pressure it was clear that some complacency had set in. Poor decision making, lazy reactive runs and weak passing was a little too common throughout the first half and this only gave Weymouth more heart. On 16 minutes Ralph came close to doubling the Hawks lead with a strike from 8 yards out on the angle that just went wide. Just on the half-time the Hawks did increase their lead when after great work from skipper Danny Mackney, Hutchings nabbed his debut goal with a well struck shoot the went in off the post. It was a relieved and slightly more settled Hawks Academy side that went in at half time 2 up.

Pagey demanded a greater quality and tempo from the lads and was rewarded when a much brighter Academy side emerged for the second half.

On 48 mins Hutchings curled a fantastically floated shot round the keeper which flew of the angle of crossbar and post and just 7 minutes later Craig Ralph was left unmarked at the far post only to see his poorly timed header float gently into a grateful keepers arms. On 57 minutes Hutchings had a shot cleared off the line. Under Galey’s instruction, Hutchings made way for Harvey Whyte on the right wing with Baldacchino moving inside to form a striking pair with Ralph. Debutant Liam Sewell was brought on for the tiring Matty Bremford on 65 mins and immediately made an impact. Barely a minute later Whyte and Sewell combined well only for Sewell to miss from close range. On 71 mins, Craig Robson played one of his imperious trademark 40 yard passes which Whyte did superbly well to reach. Harvey sent a great cross into the unmarked Sewell who dispatched the ball past the hapless Weymouth keeper with ease for his first ever Academy goal and the Hawks third of the game. Lewis Edwards came on for the tiring Ralph on 75 mins and gave the side some pace down the left. On 81 mins the game was wrapped up when Liam Sewell dropped off his marker and picked up a great pass into his feet from man of the match – left back – Liam Crosswell. With quick feet and good skills Sewell jinked past two defenders and struck a bullet for his second and the Hawks fourth.

In the end a comfortable win that keeps the side’s 100% league record after 5 matches. Weymouth were dogged and fought well though the whole match but no match to a Hawks side that simply had greater variety, strength and experience.
