Bashley off
Tue Jul 27 2010, 18:09
Shaun Gale has taken the decision to withdraw from Saturday’s friendly against Bashley to rest his side after the unexpectedly arduous nature of last week’s Joma Cup, in which the Hawks played four games in five days – three against tough League opposition. The club this morning announced they are extremely sorry to Bashley for pulling out of the match, but that they are worried about a succession of minor injuries picked up during the tournament and they don’t want to risk aggravating them. The next full first team friendly will now be against Sutton United on August 7th.

Tired Hawks lead Blackpool by two before losing out
Tue Jul 27 2010, 08:56
A tired Hawks side, playing their fourth game in five days, lead Premiership giants Blackpool by two goals before losing 3-2 in the final of the Joma South-West Cup on Sunday.
With Blackpool already crowned champions after Shrewsbury Town’s withdrawal from the competition on Saturday, the match was played as an 80 minute friendly in which the Hawks took the lead when Mustafa Tiryaki crossed for Steve Ramsey to strike in the 17th minute.
The Hawks then doubled their lead in the 36th when Bobby Hopkinson’s hard work rewarded Tiryaki with a goal himself, but Blackpool struck back from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time after Ian Simpemba brought down Alex Baptiste and Charlie Adam converted.
Blackpool then levelled in the 68th minute when Gary Taylor-Fletcher’s cross was nodded home by Jason Euell, and in a cruel twist of fate it was an own goal that sealed the game for the Seasiders when James Tyrell turned Adam’s cross into his own net eight minutes from the end.

Hawks lose, but will take Shrewsbury’s place in final
Sat Jul 24 2010, 20:01
The Hawks have made it through to the final of the Joma South-West Challenge Cup, despite losing 2-1 to League Two club Shrewsbury Town this afternoon.
The match, played at Elmore FC’s Horsdon Park, saw the Hawks two goals down as the final whistle approached after Steve Leslie set up Lewis Neal for an opener ten minutes into the game, and Tom Bradshaw followed close to the end when he fired home a long clearance from Connor Goldson.
The underdogs then claimed a consolation in injury time when Mustafa Tiryaki made the most of a badly handled corner and drove the ball home from the back of the box.
But in an unexpected twist the Shrews this evening have withdrawn from the competition ahead of tomorrow’s final, citing a growing injury list and poor playing surfaces as the cause. This has left the path open for the Hawks to progress, and take on newly promoted Premiership side Blackpool, who beat Leyton Orient 2-1 with a 90th minute goal in the other semi final this afternoon. The final will be played at Bideford FC tomorrow afternoon, kick off 3pm.

Hawks reach semis after beating Barnstaple
Sat Jul 24 2010, 14:41
The Hawks fired six goals past Barnstable Town at Mill Road on Thursday to move forward to a Semi-Final tie against Shrewsbury Town in the Joma South-West Cup. Topping their group, the Hawks are the only side in the competition yet to concede a goal, having scored eleven unanswered in two games.
Academy graduate Craig Robson struck first in the fourth minute when he headed home a throw from Jon McDonald.
It then took the Hawks until the second half to find the net again, Bobby Hokinson finishing low on the end of a pass from Liam Sewell. Steve Ramsey then made it three with a tap in after Barnstaple keeper Jamie Pow parried another effort from Hopkinson.
The Hawks then concluded the rout with three further goals in the last 15 minutes. Substitute Mustafa Tiryaki skimmed a superb first-time shot into the bottom corner, Sewell half-volleyed home at the near post and Robson fired in after a Sewell cross had deflected off Ricky Marinaro.
The Hawks’ semi-final tie against Shrewsbury is set for Saturday 24th July at the home of Elmore FC; Horsdon Park, Tiverton.

Rovers found wanting as Hawks score five unanswered
Sat Jul 24 2010, 14:13
The Hawks smashed Championship side Doncaster Rovers 5-0 in their first Joma South-West Cup game on Wednesday night. Steve Ramsey opened the scoring in the 18th minute when he fired a long Jon McDonald throw under former Spurs and Wimbledon keeper Neil Sullivan. Sam Pearce then increased the lead in the 25th minute when McDonald delivered again, and the Hawks were three up at half time after Mustafa Tiryaki fired home a 35th minute free kick.
Pearce struck again three minutes after the break, and eleven minutes from the end Bobby Hopkinson scored his first Hawks goal when he struck from the penalty spot after Tiryaki was brought down in the box.
Rovers, who beat Barnstaple Town 10-1 on Monday night in the group’s first game, issued a statement shortly after the game expressing their dissatisfaction with the tournament and immediate withdrawal from it; claiming that injuries, the limited number of substitutions possible, and the close proximity of the matches meant it would be impossible to continue.

Academy will play semi-final at Westleigh ParkSat May 8
The Academy’s impressive win at Southport in the week has lined them up for an appetising playoff semi-final clash with Bromley at Westleigh Park on Monday night.
The Conference Academy League is made up of six regional divisions, and the Hawks are two matches away from proving themselves to be the top academy outfit outside the professional game as the winners of each play off against each other.
Scheduled summer development work on the Hawks’ pitch has been postponed to allow the match to take place, and entry is free to all with a 7pm kick off.
The other semi final match sees Rushden and Diamonds take on Dartford, and the Hawks will host the victors in the final on Friday should they win their match with Bromley.

Hawks aiming to be the bestThu May 6
The SD Hawks beat Southport Academy 2-1 at the Haig Avenue Stadium yesterday to progress to the semi-finals of the Conference Academy League playoffs. The mammoth journey to Liverpool became a two day preparation trip for the side, and Danny Mackney’s volley put the side into the lead on their furthest away game yet.
Southport drew level through virtue of a penalty, but Harvey Whyte’s finish clinched the match and set the Hawks up for a semi-final tie against Bromley next Monday.
The Conference Academy playoffs are seen as the highest standard of academy football, putting the Hawks just two matches away from becoming the most highly regarded academy side in the country outside league football.

Hawks have title in sight againThu Apr 22
Having played a staggering six games in eight days, the Hawks Academy side are now just one fixture and one point away from securing the Conference Alliance Southern Division title for the second consecutive year.
Cramming in matches because of the unprecedented winter weather, the Hawks won three, drew two and lost one match in an incredible week that concluded yesterday in Exeter with a double header.
The side are now three points clear at the top of the table with only second placed Basingstoke able to catch them, and the Dragons would need to overcome a goal difference of thirteen in their final game to do so.
The Hawks take on local rivals Eastleigh in their last match of the season at Westleigh Park next Wednesday with a 7.45pm kick off.
