Hawks 4 - 2 Horndean
Tue Aug 4, 2009 : 11:25
The Academy took on Sunday League side Horndean on Sunday, running out 4-2 victors against the newly formed side.
Before giving a short brief on today’s game I must point out that this Horndean side are not connected to Wessex League Horndean FC but rather a newly formed Sunday men’s side.
On a blustery Thorney Island the Hawks made the majority of this game hard work against an opposition that had lots of bluster but little in the way of strategy and quality. However, there were some really pleasing aspects particularly the defensive line and the creativity going forward. We still need to move the ball quicker and see and play better passes but we will work on this on the training ground. For now though, it was pleasing to see some of the younger lads in action.
The Hawks dominated the game from start to finish but simply lacked clinical finishing in front of goal as they missed the target time after time. So it was quite against the run of play that saw Horndean go one up on 20mins with a well taken headed corner that we really should have dealt with. On 35mins the Hawks levelled with a well struck drive from 20 yards out by skipper Ryan Arnell. Hawks then tightened the screw with goals from Charlie Tudor (50), Luke Smith (60) and Andy White (63). Horndean did pull one back with a good individual effort.
Man of the match was Tyler Albury who showed real quality in both his positional awareness and superb passing – creating two of the Hawks goals.
