Young Saints no match for Hawks

Wes Fogden’s second minute opener put a young Southampton side on the back foot at Westleigh Park last night as Shaun Gale’s men inflicted a 2-1 defeat on the League One club. With the Saints’ first team on tour in Switzerland it fell to a largely Academy based side to hold the fort in Hampshire, but when the Hawks went two up in the 27th minute after Sammy Igoe deftly slotted the ball between keeper Jack Dovey’s legs, the game was firmly up for the visitors.
Scott Shulton’s free kick allowed Aaron Racine to find the net just before the break, but the goal was ruled offside. It took until the 74th minute for Saints to finally pull one back when Jordace Holder-Spooner fired low under second half Hawks keeper Aaron Howe, but despite a plethora of changes to their side, the Hawks held fast for the win.
In addition to some of the trial faces present in Saturday’s game against Pompey, Gale added Hayes and Yeading defender Matt Ruby to last night’s line-up, as well as Academy player Liam Crosswell.
