A superb second half performance saw the Hawks overcome gifting visitors Thurrock an early lead to make their first win of the season a stylish 4-1 at Westleigh Park.

Cliff Akurang seized upon Paul Hinshelwood’s mistake to put Thurrock’s ahead just two minutes into the game, but after a fractious first half the Hawks went in level when Wes Fogden’s deft flick found the net on the edge of injury time.

But the second half saw the Hawks put on an unequalled display that held the Thurrock goal under siege for lengthy periods. Manny Williams scored the second goal two minutes in, and Mustafa Tiryaki put the game well beyond the visitors in the 64th. Fogden then wrapped matters up in the last minute of added time with his second.

Sam Pearce headed wide a corner from Ian Selley as the Hawks attacked from kick off, but the hosts were sent reeling with less than two minutes on the clock when Hinshelwood’s back pass fell short and Akurang stole it before colliding with oncoming keeper Aaron Howe. AKURANG was quickest to recover however and regained the ball for a shot into an open net.

The Hawks missed a perfect opportunity to level the score quickly when Hopkinson’s sublime ball up the right curled round Kenny Clark for Tiryaki to thump a cross into the middle. Williams connected for a shot that went the wrong side of the post with the net gaping.

Williams then shot wide again after Fogden’s initial attempt was blocked, but the pace of the game slowed as a string of poor tackles from both sides saw tempers flare into confrontations between players.

Jake Newton brought down Matt Bodkin, but the hosts defended the following free kick easily and raced to the other end where Leon Lalite cut down Fogden as the nimble midfielder lined up his shot. Tiryaki then hammered the free kick into the wall.

While Thurrock seemed unable to fashion chances as frequently as the Hawks, the side threatened occasionally and Howe had to be alert to snatch Lee Roache’s 25 yard effort from the air.

The Hawks’ efforts paid off with a minute of the half remaining. Williams capitalised on a moment of indecision in the visiting defence and poked the ball through ahead of FOGDEN, who managed to flick it across keeper Andre Charles-Foster with the outside of his boot.

Perfectly timed, the goal lifted the Hawks and the side found a higher gear to start the second half. Just two minutes in Hopkinson again threaded the ball through the Thurrock defence, this time confounding Lee Flynn before WILLIAMS took it on for a rifled shot from the right that flew into the roof of the net.

What then followed was an astonishing fifteen minutes in which the Hawks pinned Thurrock back with chance after chance.

Williams bent a shot through the box that beat Charles-Foster but hit the post and rebounded for Fogden to head wide, before the pair combined again and Fogden set up Williams for a shot that Charles-Foster blocked.

The busy visiting keeper then punched clear a corner from Selley and Ian Simpemba latched onto it at the near post for a header that bounced down along the goal line with no one to nudge it in. A melee ensued as Thurock tried to clear their lines, leading to a driven effort from Tiryaki that crashed into an oblivious Lalite on the line.

Minutes later Tiryaki’s cross looked set for the back of the net when Williams connected with it, but his rising shot went inches high.

Tiryaki then saw a second effort cleared off the line when he nodded down Sammy Igoe’s cross and Paul Olima kicked it away with Charles-Foster nowhere to be seen.

The constant bombardment finally paid off in the 64th minute when Hopkinson tripped his way through the box and almost lost the ball to Charles-Foster with a shot that span free for TIRYAKI to follow up and slam it home from six yards.

Against the onslaught Thurrock found it hard to escape their own half, but did so long enough for Flynn to attempt a free kick that Fogden blocked in the wall.

Igoe chipped the ball up but Tiryaki and Fogden both missed chances as the Hawks went in search of a fourth. Igoe shot wide when provided by Fogden, but the icing on the cake came in the fourth minute of added time when substitute Javonne Molloy lofted the ball in from the right and FOGDEN stumbled his way past Charles-Foster to finish with seconds of the game remaining.
